Evening Reunion (6:30PM)
Location: Capitol Hill 2nd Ward
413 N West Capitol St, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103
(map & directions)
This historic 'rock church' is located 4 blocks north of The Conference Center at the top of Main Street, just west of the Utah State Capitol and north of the Pioneer Memorial Museum, the same location as five years ago-many thanks to Yuriko Arakaki Rees for reserving it. This meetinghouse has no parking lot; use adjacent streets for parallel parking - carpooling is encouraged.

Why Now? It's been 45 years since the mission's founding.  Much has happened in the five years since our last reunion, including:

  • The fact that our Sendai Mission boundaries were 'realigned' 01 Jul 2019 and the 'Sendai' mission name will no longer be used
  • We're not getting realigned (well, perhaps our shapes are changing), but:
    • we are all getting older, and
    • we have a lot to catch up on!

Particulars:
  • 6:30PM start time    (kangei, sanbika, kaikai o-inori, shokuji-kai)
  • Business casual dress - slacks/sweaters - 'Aloha wear' suggested to honor Teruyas

  • '60/6' Potluck - If you live within about 60 miles, and you're able, please bring a favorite dish for ~6 people (plates, cups & utensils will be supplied). Feel free to bring either a Japanese or non-Japanese favorite dish, and if favorite dish is fruit plate, salad or dessert, sure, bring that-we need those too!
    • How far is 'within 60 miles'? (Brigham City on the north and Payson
on the south are our thresholds.) If you live further, you're good-just bring an appetite.
    • The 60-mile guideline obviously exempts out-of-state and international guests from bringing anything; thank you for just bringing yourselves!

Reunion Format:
We've learned from past reunions that most folks just want to reminisce and catch up with long-lost friends and companions. It's an open-house (cultural hall) setup with pot luck buffet and dining tables; we'll also set up several 'conversation circles' where people can visit informally. Adjacent classrooms will be set up with videos of President & Sister Teruya speaking at an early reunion and a natsukashii mission-days slideshow.  Please plan on arriving in plenty of time before 6:30PM and stay as long as you wish.
Reunion RSVP/Registration Requested: - We hope you can join us, but we need to know (and others will want to see) if you'll be there:
  1. So we can guage meetinghouse set-up requirements, please use the 'Ticket/Activity Registration for Events' box at the top of this page. Enter 'quantity,' then click 'continue' to successive pages to complete registration. You'll receive a confirmation email listing your 'order.'  Once you receive that email, you should be listed in the RM List as 'attending.' If you're having trouble registering, change your mind or you want to change your 'quantity,' Contact Us so we can manually update your registration.
  2. Golf is completely optional, of course, but event RSVP/registration is critical so we'll know how many tee times to reserve--registration closes 9 days out, when tee times will be reserved
  3. If you're not planning on attending, please take a minute to edit/update your own profile (link at left under member functions) We've added a question ("I won't be able to join everyone for the 45 Year Reunion, but instead I'll be..._________"). We understand some folks have non-negotiable plans and we also realize reunions aren’t for everyone, so even keying in, “choosing not to attend” helps.  Thanks.
We will also absolutely welcome the few of you who may be last-minute spur-of-the-moment or sit-on-the fence folks, whether or not you RSVP'd/registered. C'mon and join us!

Reunion FAQs
  1. How Can I Help?  Many people have offered to help, but the help we really need is finding people to have them join the Site. We have a lot of 'Missing RMs' and RMs who haven’t yet updated their profiles here (no checkmark next to their name on the 'RM List'), as well as a few folks who previously joined our Site but whose email addresses bounced (see 'Fix Email' link).  If you’re in touch with any of these folks or with a little effort you can track them down (Are you Facebook friends with them, for example?), please take the initiative to do so - remember that you may be the only connection back to them!  Please make it your 'mission' to contact them yourself and direct them to join/update their profile here at japansendai.org. Thanks.
  2. How Can I Tell Who's Coming to the Reunion? Once you're logged in and click on the link to our 'RM List' page, you'll see our reunion events listed at the top. Click on a reunion event and a list of RMs who have registered/RSVP'd for that event will generate just below the box (please note that numerical totals there only tally RMs, and don't include a count of spouses/guests).  RMs who have registered for a reunion event have a  icon displayed next to their name in the 'RM List'; if you're coming and don't have a icon next to your name, you didn't complete your registration at the top of this page. Please try again or Contact Us - we are happy manually enter your RSVP/registration upon request.
  3. What about homestays? If you're traveling from out of town and haven't already arranged for or need a place to stay, or if you're a Salt Lake-area local and would like to be a homestay host,  please Contact Us - we'll do our best to get you together.
  4. I'm not sure I want to attend the reunion.  What if I: a) never married, b) got divorced, c) gained 80 (or more) pounds, d) am bald, or e) am not really into the Church? Get a grip—we’re all old and it doesn’t really matter. It's a chance to see old friends, meet some new ones, and strengthen the ties that bind us. Step out of your comfort zone and get off the fence - just do it and join us!
  5. Questions/Need Site Assistance? Don’t hesitate to use the 'Contact Us' link at left or email our Site Administrator Todd Ogaard directly at japansendaiteruya@gmail.com  Thanks.

Where?  We'll reserve tee times at Bonneville Golf Course starting based on the registrations discussed above. Costs will be paid by you at check-in at the course. ($24-9 holes, $50-18 holes; includes 'senior' green fees and cart) Players should arrive at least 20 minutes in advance or earlier if you want to hit a bucket of balls.
What?  This is NOT a tournament; just another informal reunion get-together event.
Why?  Why not? We tried this last reunion, remembering how President Teruya loved to golf and chat before reunions. We had three foursomes - good times! This time we included a choice of either 9 or 18 holes.
Who? Anyone who is a golfer is welcome to join.  We'll try to arrange foursomes with similar levels of ability, and will be contacting those who sign up to facilitate that and with specific tee times.
When? The deadline for golf registration is 9 days in advance so we can reserve tee times. 18-hole times are planned to begin at 9am, and 9-hole times at 10am. If you have questions, don't hesitate to Contact Us.
